Microsoft: Recent Windows updates may fail to install via WUSA

What’s new: Microsoft has identified and mitigated an issue causing Windows update failures when using the Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA) to install updates from network shares. This affects Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 systems, resulting in error ERROR_BAD_PATHNAME when multiple .msu files are present. The issue does not occur with single .msu files or local installations. A Known Issue Rollback (KIR) is being rolled out to mitigate the problem on home and non-managed devices.

Who’s affected

IT admins managing Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 systems on enterprise networks may encounter this issue when attempting to install updates from network shares.

What to do

  • For managed devices, apply the Known Issue Rollback Group Policy to resolve the issue.
  • As a workaround, save .msu files locally and install updates from that location.
